Africa Merchant Capital Limited is an independently owned corporate finance advisory firm with a dedicated focus on the high growth private markets of Sub-Saharan Africa.
The team draws from multi-disciplinary professional experience including corporate finance, merchant banking, consulting, advisory and personal investing gained from global banks to SME’s.
Our corporate finance team advises on private middle market transactions with access to a range of different investor types from private equity funds, endowments and pension funds to high net worth individuals and family offices.
Our track record includes successful transactions in the FMCG, agri-processing, mobile media, real estate, mining and healthcare sectors from Ghana to Zimbabwe and South Africa.
From our base in London, our business model is partnership driven. We travel to the region and work with chosen local partners to manage transactions and provide on-the-ground relationship verification and due diligence.
We come from Africa and are personally invested in Africa.
Cobus is co-founder and CEO of Africa Merchant Capital. Cobus was previously Principal for Africa at Templewood Merchant Bank before founding AMC. His professional experience includes corporate finance advisory, merchant banking, business consulting and auditing, as well as personal investing in Africa. Cobus qualified as a chartered accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers in South Africa of which the last 5 years were in the Global Risk Management Services division. Cobus also managed to pursue a successful international and professional rugby career spanning both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Cobus holds a B.Comm(Hons) degree from the University of Stellenbosch.
Jan is co-founder and COO of Africa Merchant Capital. Previously Jan was Senior Associate at Templewood Merchant Bank where he worked across the principal investing and advisory sectors of TMT, Energy, Industrials and Real Estate involved in all aspects of the transaction cycle from origination to distribution. Jan was instrumental in setting up the internal processes and helped develop the bank’s business plan. Previously Jan worked in a variety of financial management and controller roles at Barclays retail and commercial banking and Wells Fargo corporate and investment banking, both in London. Jan qualified as a chartered accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, South Africa. Jan holds a B.Comm(Hons) degree from the University of Stellenbosch and is a CFA charterholder.
Willem is an associate and strategic partner of Africa Merchant Capital, focused on resources. Willem was previously Business Development Manager (Africa) for Rio Tinto Energy and more recently consulted to the wider mining industry including majors (eg. Rio Tinto and AngloGold Ashanti) and a variety of juniors. His professional experience includes private equity, corporate finance advisory, management consulting, change and project management, as well as auditing. Willem qualified as a chartered accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, South Africa. Willem holds a LL.B legal degree from the University of Johannesburg and a B.Compt (Hons) degree from the University of South Africa.
Sebastian is an associate of African Merchant Capital, with a focus on East African transactions from his base in Kenya. Sebastian is an experienced private equity investor and manager, having led transactions at Canter Equity Partners, where he was Managing Partner, Fidelity Equity Partners, Promethean Investments and Kleinwort Capital. He has particular specialities in media and technology businesses. Sebastian holds a B.Sc. Economics degree with honours from the LSE and an MBA from the London Business School.
Grant is an associate of African Merchant Capital, with a focus on pan-African strategic advisory with a particular emphasis on consumer and agriculture projects. Grant has held leadership positions at a number of strategy consultants including Capgemini Consulting and previously led Accenture’s growth offerings in Africa. He is also Managing Director of Tradouw Fruit, which grows, packs and markets deciduous fruit under the Tradouw brand into Europe, Africa, Middle and Far East. Grant holds a PhD in Agriculture from the University of Kwa-Zulu-Natal and an MBA from the University of Cape Town.
